Future Lunar Exploration: Chandrayaan-4 & Chandrayaan-5

Future Lunar Exploration: Chandrayaan-4 & Chandrayaan-5

Bengaluru, India — 25 May, 2025

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for a landmark achievement in the nation’s space journey with the much-anticipated Gaganyaan Mission — India’s first human spaceflight program. The mission aims to send three Indian astronauts into space, marking a significant stride toward self-reliant human space exploration.

Gaganyaan will carry the astronauts to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of approximately 400 km, where they will spend up to three days in space before returning safely to Earth. The spacecraft, developed indigenously by ISRO, will be launched atop a GSLV Mk III (now called LVM3), India’s most powerful launch vehicle.

Before the final crewed mission, ISRO has planned a series of uncrewed test flights, including the successful TV-D1 test which validated the crew escape system — a critical safety feature designed to protect astronauts during launch emergencies.

This mission places India among the elite group of nations—alongside the United States, Russia, and China—that have developed independent capabilities to send humans to space. It also opens doors to future endeavors like space stations, interplanetary crewed missions, and a robust space economy.

As India celebrates its growing presence in the global space community, Gaganyaan stands as a testament to the country’s scientific excellence, technological innovation, and commitment to peaceful space exploration.
